Westerville Works
Understanding the Workforce Challenge Shaping Our Community

About three months ago, I came across a social media post from a Central Ohio business that caught my attention.
The business had received a negative review from a customer frustrated that they were closed at 8 p.m.
At first glance, it might seem like a fair complaint. Businesses have posted hours for a reason and customers have expectations.
But there was more to the story.
The business later shared that it had made the difficult decision to close early that evening because it did not have enough staff to remain open safely and effectively. Rather than overextend an already strained team, they adjusted operations for the night.
The response resonated with me, so I shared it on LinkedIn.
What happened next surprised me.
It became one of the most engaged-with posts I have shared in quite some time. The comments were thoughtful. The direct messages poured in. Business owners, managers, employees and community members all had something to say.
Why?
Because nearly everyone had experienced some version of the same challenge.
Restaurants adjusting hours. Retail stores closing earlier than they once did. Businesses operating with smaller teams. Owners stepping behind the counter, answering phones or working weekends to fill staffing gaps.
What was once viewed as a temporary problem has become a reality for many businesses.

And while I have little patience for the growing tendency to publicly shame a small business before understanding the full story, that was not what stayed with me most.
What stayed with me was this:
The conversation revealed just how many people recognize something has changed, but how few understand why.
That is why the Westerville Area Chamber, in partnership with Uptown Westerville Inc., is launching Westerville Works.
Westerville Works is a community-wide initiative designed to raise awareness, educate the public and advocate for the businesses and people who keep our community moving. Through stories, resources, data and real-world examples, we hope to create a deeper understanding of the challenges employers face and the role all of us can play in supporting them.
This campaign is not about making excuses.
It is about creating understanding.
For business owners, the challenges are visible every day. They see it in hiring efforts, scheduling struggles and operating costs. They see it in the pressure placed on employees who continue showing up and serving customers despite growing demands.
For many customers, however, those realities are not always as obvious. We simply experience the end result: a longer wait, reduced hours or a service delay.
Over the coming weeks, we will explore what is driving these challenges and why they matter. We will discuss workforce trends, shifting demographics, changing career pathways and the realities businesses face in attracting and retaining talent. Most importantly, we will highlight the people behind our local businesses who continue to show up every day to serve our community.
Because at the end of the day, businesses are more than storefronts, logos and balance sheets.
They are people.
They are your neighbors, friends and family members.
They are the individuals opening the doors before sunrise, serving customers during the lunch rush and staying late to make sure the work gets done.
Westerville works because people show up.
Let us show up for them, too.
