Why Shopping Local Matters

Valentine’s Day is about celebrating the people we care about and it’s also a perfect moment to show some love to the community that surrounds us.

When you shop locally here in the Westerville area, especially from Chamber members, you’re doing more than finding the perfect gift, you’re strengthening our local economy, supporting neighbors, and keeping dollars working right here at home.

Local Dollars Stay Local

One of the most powerful reasons to shop small is economic impact. Research shows that around 70 cents of every dollar spent at a local business stays in the local economy. This “local multiplier effect” means your purchase circulates through the Westerville community and surrounding areas, supporting other businesses and local services.

That’s not just a nice thought, it's a real economic benefit. Your Valentine’s Day dinner from a restaurant on State Street, a handcrafted gift from a local shop in uptown, or a bouquet from a nearby florist helps sustain jobs and fund local services that make Westerville a vibrant place to live.

Small Businesses Fuel Jobs and Community Vitality

Our local businesses are major employers in our community – hiring local residents, creating opportunities for your friends and your neighbors. When you choose local, you help sustain these jobs and encourage new ones. Beyond jobs, local shops give Westerville its unique personality. They offer handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gifts you won’t find online or at big box stores (perfect for Valentine’s Day gifting!)

Connection through Commerce
When you step into a local business, you’re not just spending money, you’re building connections. These small shops are owned by trusted neighbors in your community. Their success contributes to Westerville’s character, enriches local culture, and enhances everyday life in ways larger shops can’t replicate.
